Ocean Wildlife: A Classroom Nonfiction Book

3/22/11: The book is going swimmingly HAHAHA! No, it has been a lot if fun for the students and myself. We are scheduled to be finished with the classroom book on Friday. It has taken more time that I thought this project would. We have voted on the title for our book and it is (drum roll please)…. Ocean Wildlife. This title won by a landslide in the classroom. I am also impressed that the students decided to use real photos in this book and has created a wonderful teaching opportunity (another reason for the extended time). We have created the book in power point and every group has also included a diagram of their animal. The groups picked out a picture and told me where to name the features. I was able to show the students about inserting a text box and auto shapes. We also were able to discuss the importance of a good picture to go along with the Subject header on each page. If the students were creating a diagram then we needed a picture of the whole body etc.

There are six groups working on this book: Dolphins, Sharks, Killer Whales, Stingrays, Sea Turtles, and Ocean Fish. Each group was able to choose the animal that they wanted to research and work together finding facts in books, on the internet and some students even brought things from home. After the group came up with several facts we worked together organizing the facts into categories like: food, cool facts, babies, etc. The students got a little creative on some of the header names. We also went to www.askkids.com to double-check facts because I found that some students were writing ideas that they thought were true down. After all this we picked out out all the pictures as a group, and used text boxes to insert the fact onto the pictures. Students also had a valuable lesson in siting sources and that we write everything down. I approached this topic in the form of….. Nonfiction authors fact finders most of the time scientist find the fact and authors group them together into a nonfiction book. We must pay the scientist credit for all their hard work. Having students come up with the facts in their own words was also somewhat of a task, but they quickly caught on and sailed (hahaha again) right on through. I am very excited to finally see the send result of this book as well. This is truly an amazing process to be apart of!

So the class has voted and finally come up with the topic of Oceans for our Nonfiction book. There were several topics that came up after sorting through tons of Nonfiction books:

  • Ponds
  • Birds
  • Crocodiles
  • Candy
  • House Pets
  • Oceans

My little Darlings love the ocean and so do I, so I am inviting you all to come along on our under water voyage into the sea.

Now I have broken the bookoo’s abd bookoo’s of ocean animals down to six catagories. The students will use the attached pdf below to choose the group that they will work with. If there is too many students intrested in a group of their first choice I have asked for a second choice as well. Good Luck Kiddo’s !!!
